About

Sàimh
Sound, (pronounced “sife sound,”) is a sonic and visual arts collective, focussed on exploring the cultural
and natural heritage of Scotland through sound, photography, film and ambient
music. Inspired by nature writers like Nan Sheperd and Robert MacFarlane, Sàimh
Sound intends to create powerful meditations on the solace that is to be found in
Scottish wildness and relay stories and legends that have been lost or neglected by
the history books, with particular focus on historical decolonisation. The
project will also focus on the delicate nature of Scottish eco-systems and
draw from the perpetual angst felt by its founders around the growing
threat from climate change.

	Abstract
In August 2021, we (Rory & Colin) travelled to Colin’s home island of Lismore to spend a week camping and creating a series of works reflecting on the island’s geology, flora, fauna, folklore and history. Our days were spent wandering the island recording, filming, producing, writing, drawing and setting up mini-installations to be documented. We would like to say a huge thank you to CHARTS, https://www.chartsargyllandisles.org/ as well as the Glasgow School of Art Students Association for making this possible, and also Norma & Gilleasbuig Black for all the electricity.
The works (left) will be uploaded fortnightly. We hope you enjoy them. We hope to use these works to encourage “slow tourism,” a set of ideals for travel that prioritise sustainability, respect for the environment and highland exploration that benefits rural communities and grassroots art.If you would like more information about the island, how to get there, where you can stay, and the best ways to explore responsibly please reach out on instagram:https://www.instagram.com/saimhsound/or send an email to:saimhsound@gmail.comLinks to some places on Lismore worth looking into:https://www.lismoregaelicheritagecentre.org/

Colin Black - FounderColin is a music producer, DJ, photographer and videographer from the Inner-hebridean Isle of Lismore, off the West Coast of Scotland. Currently living and studying in Glasgow, Colin is looking to expand his creative horizons, and develop projects that connect to his heritage and his love for the natural world.Having spent the past several years running successful club nights in Glasgow, Colin’s goals are to express the fondness he feels for the natural environments he grew up in, and explore Scotland’s cultural heritage by creating works inspired by or telling the stories of Scotland’s history, with a focus on stories that seem to slip by the general Scottish knowledge.Colin’s unique blend of somber sound design and digital & analog synthesis give his works an alluring melancholic, and sometimes foreboding tone.

Rory Green - FounderRory is a multidisciplinary digital artist and music producer from the Campsie Fells, currently living in Glasgow. He is studying at the Glasgow School of Art, and has released numerous musical works under the moniker Manuka.Rory integrates synthesis hardware and digital sound production methods into cathartic works, which at times draw inspiration directly from the Scottish wilderness. His ambient record Palisades focussed on Corrour in the Scottish Highlands, capturing the peaceful and sometimes harsh nature of the landscape. Available to listen/watch/buy hereIn 2019, Rory took part in Audiotalaia’s annual sound arts residency in the Catalan mountains, near Barcelona. Drawing influence from his surroundings and collaborating with artists from around the world, Rory created a series of pieces and a public installation. Available to listen/buy hereRory’s intentions with Sàimh Sound are to explore Scotland’s natural history through the lense of ambient music and sound creation, and shine a light on Scotland’s profound natural beauty, its blissful yet sometimes harsh atmosphere, and the threats it faces with the onset of climate change.Rylan Gleave - Composer, ContributorRylan Gleave is a Leith-based composer and vocalist whose musical practice involves mending the unfeigned gaps in his classical voice study with the healings of imaginative neuro-/gender-divergent kinship. Re-emerging as a composer/performer, his recent work has explored the instrumental qualities of his late-breaking trans-masc voice through queer autoethnography, and autistic-specific notation. His compositions have been praised as ‘haunting’ by The Herald, and ‘rapturous’ by The Scotsman, who named him ‘One to Watch’ 2021, describing him as ‘one of the brightest lights in Scotland’s new music scene’.
Recent commissions include pieces for the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Composer Programme / Presteigne Festival, Sound and Music / New Voices, Crossing Borders Music / Momenta Dance Company, Shadwell Opera, newEar Chamber Ensemble / KC No Divide, and Red Note Ensemble. His recent projects have included new notes; better days, working with Cox's Bazar Rohingya Refugee Musicians in Bangladesh, after receiving a British Council Unlimited Micro Award: and KITH, nominated for Forecast Edition 6, Berlin, where he was mentored by composer/performer Sofia Jernberg. Currently he is working with cellist and improviser Simone Seales with Oxford Contemporary Music (OCM) on their residency, BOOM.

Instrument: Danu System

Drawing its name from the Celtic
mother-goddess, Danu
System was designed for allegorical reproductions of biological
forces and natural phenomena, creating sonic environments that tell stories
about the natural world, its people, and their
interpretations of nature.

Fractal sequencing, granular
textures, physical modelling synthesis and deep modulation matrixes sonify our
principles and breathe organismic behaviour into imagined microcosms.

Piece: Eiocha

“Once upon a time, there was no
time and that was when there also was no gods and no man walked the surface of
the land. But there was the sea, and where the sea met the land, a mare was
born, white and made of sea-foam. And her name was Eiocha.” - Scott A. Leonard (2004) "Myth and
Knowing"

Eiocha is an ambient performance on modular synth,
where modulation interactions recreate what an ancient Celt may have felt
whilst observing the shoreline, considering the invisible and unknown forces at
play.

Patch:

The modulation centre represents the
force of the moon on the tide, which breathes motion into its surroundings. The
modules built by Glasgow-based Instruo take their names from Gaelic words. The
filter module's name Tràigh means “the rise and fall of the sea.” The sea is represented by three
oscillators, whose suffocated tones depict submerged movement beneath the waves. Bloom, a fractal
sequencer designed around plant growth and permutation, represents the
diversity of aquatic life beneath. Chance procedures cause continual generative evolution
characterising the Celtic subjects' unknowing of the deep. The piece is
polyphonically quantised in a traditional Celtic scale, and a physical
modelling synthesis module excites an amorphous corpus that shifts between
illusory sounds based on traditional iron age instruments and working
practices. Textural synthesis contributes to the aural field, tied tightly to
the lunar modulation network.

She makes me think

of all the agitated patterns

that the sea leaves in the sand

the augmenting trail-trees

dragged west from the shore

She makes me remember

the panoramic riverbed

macrocosmic landscape

where I’d watch cavorting sticklebacks

submerged and undisturbed

She makes me feel

like I’m lying in the undergrowth

the sky’s sighs fluctuate the rhubarb-roof

vast leaf eyelids nictitating

sun scintillating, glancing through

She makes me wish

for an oar disturbed surface

where ripple lily tapestries

sway and reassemble

halcyon reform

And she makes me recall

the lattices of winter

the crystal carpet settles and the water marbleises

and I succumb to glaciation

Tràigh is a live audio performance recorded
on a beach on Lismore. The encroaching tide served as a time constraint, one take to film and record the audio before we got wet, removing the opportunity for a retake. The outcome contains all of our impulses, inclinations and imperfections. We chose to reflect on tidal cycles, and the shoreline next to our camp where we cooked, washed and built fires in the evenings.
Tràigh was created using various small hardware synthesizers, (OP-1, Volca FM, Monotron delay,) chained into a foley recorder that served as an audio interface. Ableton was manipulated using MIDI controllers.

For Bearna we considered Lismore’s unique geology. Lismore, (Lios Mòr,) translates directly as “great garden,” due to its rich floral diversity and fertile land, which occurs due to the limestone makeup of the island.
We also thought about how rocks and stones contain echoes of prehistoric islanders. The first picture below (left) is of a “cup marks stone.” The marks were likely left by neolithic people from around 4000-6000 years ago. Theories about the purpose of these marks range from smithing, rituals or art - such as maps pf the stars. Nobody is sure.
The second picture below (right) is a stone from an ancient burial mound. Lismore has an incredibly rich history, with various sites that you can easily explore. Get in touch if any of this interests you and we can point you in the right direction.
A wonderful source for Lismore’s history is local historian Robert Hay’s “Lismore: The Great Garden.”
